Course Description

This course will give the student who has completed NA 1500 theory and clinical or an equivalent course, the knowledge, and skills necessary for employment in a hospital or other acute care setting. The student will receive classroom and lab/clinical training which will help them prepare to care for the acutely ill or chronically ill patient. Clinical experience in the hospital setting will be provided. This course may be taken concurrently with HCOP 1610, ENGL 1117, PSYC 1611 or PSYC 2618 for those students that are pursing completing the Advance Hospital Nursing Assistant Certificate.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the hospital nursing assistant role and responsibilities.
2. Describe other allied health patient care roles in the hospital/acute care setting.
3. Demonstrate the infection control practices of standard precautions and isolation procedures.
4. Describe common diseases and conditions in the hospitalized patient population.
5. Demonstrate accurate measurement of vital signs.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of pre-operative and post-operative care.
7. Describe care for patients exhibiting difficult and unsafe behaviors.
8. Perform personal care skills within the NA scope of practice and safe standards of care.
9. Perform technical care skills within the NA scope of practice and safe standards of care.
10. Demonstrate the ability to record, report information and data accurately.
11. Demonstrate effective communication skills related to patient care.
12. Demonstrate confidentiality and knowledge of HIPAA regulations.

Special Information (if any)

Required: federal and state background checks, a negative tuberculin skin test or negative chest x-ray, designated health form and vaccination documents as required by the clinical site. Students are required to wear the designated uniform for the clinical experience. Mandatory attendance is required for the course. Students must complete the theory and lab satisfactorily to be eligible to attend clinical.
