Course Description
This course is designed to assist the student in developing a comprehensive knowledge of the nursing care of the pediatric patient. There is a focus on normal growth and development of the well child from infancy through adolescence. Principles of nursing management of children with disabilities and illnesses are examined with an emphasis on the effects of illness/hospitalization on the family unit and the growth and development of the child. Concepts relate to health prevention and promotion of the pediatric patient with acute/chronic conditions and communicable diseases. Clinical experiences are designed for application of theory to patient care.

- Apply the theories of Erickson, Piaget, and Kohlberg in the nursing care of children and families.
- Identify health promotion measures for children of all ages.
- Identify the RN role and legal responsibilities for assessment and reporting of child abuse and neglect.
- Implement nursing interventions which assist the child in meeting his/her developmental needs.
- Develop an understanding for the journey of children and families diagnosed with chronic health conditions.
- Apply evidenced-based practice of nursing in the care of children experiencing various health alterations.
- Apply developmentally appropriate communication techniques in the care of children.
- Incorporate a child’s/family’s culture and spiritual beliefs in meeting their health care needs.
