Course Description
This course provides an overview of the nursing care for critically ill patients. Principles of nursing management of patients with endocrine disorders, multisystem organ dysfunction, and common emergencies including trauma and burns are examined. Organ donation/transplant issues and nursing implications are discussed. Ethical considerations and priority nursing interventions discussed. Each student has one acute care clinical laboratory period a week. Students will have an opportunity to observe in a critical care and/or emergency care setting to correlate RN roles and health team collaboration in meeting priority patient health needs.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Examine legal, ethical, sociological and economic issues of organ donation and transplant.
- Identify principles of nursing management for patients with endocrine dysfunction, shock, trauma and common emergencies.
- Prioritize nursing care of critically ill patients.
- Apply the nursing process to the hospitalized (acutely and critically ill) patient.
- Manage care of 2 complex patients in the acute care setting.
- Identify and apply the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics utilized in the nursing management of critically ill patients.
