Course Description
This course is designed to provide nursing students the opportunity to work with culturally diverse individuals/groups either locally or globally. Students will choose either Option A: local clinical experience or Option B: travel abroad clinical experience. Students will choose a clinical practicum (Option A or Option B) where they will observe care to individuals/groups from diverse cultures. The nurse’s role in and responsibilities to marginalized groups will be explored. The student will move beyond cultural sensitivity and awareness to the development of providing culturally competent care.

Option A: To be arranged with local clinical sites. For example: Salvation Army, Community Health Clinic or Interfaith Hospitality Network Field trips (local): cost determined as per College Field Trip Policy Option B: Travel to Ecuador (all transportation, room and board included) In addition: Students must also pay a mandatory "MnSCU Foreign Travel Accident Coverage" fee (note: this is NOT the same as travel insurance) Travel insurance can be purchased through outside agencies and is an optional fee. Note: Once airline tickets are purchased there are no refunds from the airline due to our discounts so please consider whether or not you would like travel insurance carefully. Each student will be required to obtain their own United States passport and any immunizations needed for the country of entry at their own expense. Each student will be required to pay a designated course fee plus tuition differential, amount determined each year, for the plane tickets, hotels, meals and transportation in three divided payments to the RCTC Business Office Prior to place ticket purchases.
