Course Description
This course is designed to provide an overview of the role of the practical nurse. Maslow’s hierarchy of basic human needs, Watson’s Philosophy of Caring, focused nursing assessments and patient data collection are introduced. This course focuses on nursing care of older adults with common medical disorders. Basic technical nursing skills are presented with return demonstration by the student. Clinical and simulation experiences provide further application of theoretical concepts.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Describe the role of the practical nurse in the collaborative management of patient care.
- Describe current political, demographic, and socioeconomic trends in health care delivery.
- Identify nursing roles in health promotion, health maintenance, health restoration and end of life care.
- Describe legal and ethical dimensions of nursing practice.
- Implement therapeutic interpersonal communication techniques with patients in the lab or clinical setting.
- Describe essential components of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and Watson’s Philosophy of Caring.
- Conduct focused and evidence-based health assessments and report findings.
- Collaborate with other health care providers in the development and modification of a plan of care by utilizing the nursing process.
- Perform basic nursing skills safely in simulated and/or clinical situations.
- Demonstrate principles of documentation.
- Perform safe non-parenteral medication administration.
- Discuss common medical disorders affecting the older adult.
- Conduct a cultural assessment on an assigned cultural group and present to peers.
