Course Description

This course covers instruction and practical experience in radar operation and DUI detection, testing, and processing. Students demonstrate their ability in simulated situations through the use of appropriate methods and by preparing concise, accurate reports. Elements of traffic offenses are analyzed and applied to hypothetical situations. Students learn the basic theory and use of radar and current trends in violations and arrest. Students learn the performance and limitations of patrol vehicle under different conditions. In order to enroll in this course a student must have approval by a Minnesota Professional Peace Officer Education Program Coordinator and successful completion of psychological and physical exams. Completion Requirements: A minimum of a “C” grade will be required to pass this course.

Learning Outcomes (General)

The student will be able to:

  1. Recognize vehicle operators who are under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of DUI laws and the application of field sobriety tests.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of the Doppler radar.
  4. Operate the radar from both stationary and moving modes.
  5. Demonstrate vehicle stopping techniques.
  6. Demonstrate techniques for searching suspects and vehicles.
  7. Explain the civil liabilities associated with emergency vehicle operation.
  8. Demonstrate proper vehicle operation in a variety of settings by utilizing different evasive techniques.
