Course Description
This course will introduce concepts of first aid, care for critically ill patients, emergency nursing, oncology, cardiology, neurology, and collection of bone marrow aspirates. This course provides for practical experience in performing specific skills involved with animal nursing and builds on knowledge gained in previous courses.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Describe maintenance of chest, tracheostomy, and pharyngostomy tubes.
- Understand physical therapy.
- Perform first aid and CPR.
- Apply emergency splints and bandages. - casting and bandaging.
- Perform venipuncture for treatment or blood sampling.
- Understand how to collect, crossmatch, and give blood transfusions.
- Apply established emergency protocol. 8. Identify emergency situations.
- Understand and interpret electrocardiographic tracings
- Identify toxicities.
- Perform orogastric intubation and understand nasogastric.
- Maintain medical emergency supplies.
- Demonstrate emergency care of orphaned or newborn animals.
- Perform emergency physical examinations.
- Describe advanced parenteral injection- IO, IP, IV.

Special Information (if any)
The initial lab session explains and familiarizes the student with general safety hazards and safety equipment to the lab. During the pre- lab discussion, the hazardous characteristics of any materials used during a lab are discussed. In addition, if the lab involves any potentially infectious or zoonotic material, the students will be instructed on the proper use and disposal. The instructor will direct all students to where necessary protective equipment while working with any hazardous chemicals. A copy of Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used is available in the lab.
