Course Description
This course surveys infectious and noninfectious diseases of domestic animals. The content includes aspects of disease such as etiology, clinical signs, treatment, prevention, and pathology. Animal health care and preventative disease procedures will be implemented. Principles of the disease process, epidemiology, zoonoses, public health significance as well as behavior management will be emphasized. Attendance is required for successful completion of the course. To enroll in the course an overall grade of C or better is required for previously required courses.

Learning Outcomes (General)
The student will be able to:
- Identify bacterial, viral, parasitic, mycotic and other miscellaneous diseases of domestic animals.
- Identify etiology, clinical signs and symptoms of common diseases of domestic animals.
- Perform prevention and treatment protocols of common diseases of domestic animals.
- Identify zoonotic diseases and public health concerns related to diseases of domestic animals.
- Perform kennel maintenance procedures.
- Describe chronological order to behavioral development of the canine and feline.
- Describe the social behavior of the canine and feline.
- Describe various methods of preventing behavioral problems.
- Identify intervention techniques that may be used to eliminate or modify abnormal behavior.
- Describe common behavioral problems in the canine and feline.
- Apply client education in relationship to behavioral problems.
- Identify appropriate drug therapy for behavioral disorders.

Special Information (if any)
The initial lab session explains and familiarizes the student with general safety hazards and safety equipment to the lab. During the pre- lab discussion, the hazardous characteristics of any materials used during a lab are discussed. In addition, if the lab involves any potentially infectious or zoonotic material, the students will be instructed on the proper use and disposal. The instructor will direct all students to where necessary protective equipment while working with any hazardous chemicals. A copy of Material Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used is available in the lab.
