On Dec. 2, RCTC’s creative writing club held their first public reading. Called “Pieces of Our Lives,” it featured essays, poems and short stories written by club members during the semester.

Munira Alimire’s essay “Memories of Not Belonging” told her story of growing up an outsider in her own community, while Isaac Sindt’s poem “We Are Human” recognized the importance of understanding that as humans, our similarities are greater than any individual differences. Ilhan Raage reaffirmed this in her poem “Stronger Than Our Fear” with the powerful line “We lose the best things when we are too afraid / to fight back.”

Lydia Hansen followed this with her poem “Arrows,” which was about being free to make her own choices. Sydney Holets also performed a poem called “Home For My Heart” where she talked about personal pain and growing to a brighter future.

This was followed by John Gregory’s short story “Time Management” which reflected what it takes to make someone break the rules. Joshua Robertson’s poem “I Suppose I Just Miss Her” revolved around the loss of a close friendship and the importance of never letting go of those you love.

The event closed with Ari Bailey’s story “Girlfriend” about a woman afraid of losing the person she loves best.

“I really enjoyed hearing these stories,” said one of the guests in attendance, “They were so very powerful and meaningful. They really do capture the essence of what it means to be a student at RCTC.”
