Soccer team advances to Region XIII finals

The RCTC soccer team advanced to the Region XIII championship game of the Minnesota College Athletic Association but fell to No. 1 ranked Anoka-Ramsey Community College 12-1 on Oct. 22.

After getting off to a solid start and only trailing 2-1, injuries to starters Anahi Alvarez and Hannah Stelley, as well as goalkeeper Micah Jeppeson, opened the floodgates as Anoka Ramsey scored 10 unanswered goals.

Three days earlier, the Yellowjackets upset Lake Superior College 2-1 in overtime in the opening round of the Region XIII tournament. The teams had met twice during the regular season with Lake Superior coming away with 6-0 and 2-0 victories.

On the strength of a stingy defense and good goalkeeping, RCTC outshot Lake Superior throughout the contest, and the two teams ended regulation tied 1-1 with Manigbe Kenneh accounting for the Yellowjacket goal.During regulation goalkeeper Micah Jeppesen saved a penalty kick to keep the game deadlocked.Then only a minute and a half into overtime, Shelby Bailey scored off a corner kick to seal the win and send RCTC to the Region final.
