Liberalism is the idea that a government’s job is to help its citizens pursue their own idea of the good life. This general philosophy, shared by both left-wing liberals and libertarians, helped inspire movements for democracy, human rights, and good governance for much of the last 200 years. In this talk, we’ll look at current “communitarian” challenges to liberalism that have arisen both from left-wing progressives and from cultural conservatives. According to these critics, government should take a much more active role in shaping the lives of their citizens, through restrictions on immigration, higher education, health care, and the media. We’ll consider the validity of these criticisms, as well as ways defenders of liberalism can respond.
