Job Responsibilities

  • Greet students as they enter the WC and guide them through the sign-in process, answering any questions they have.
  • Explain the WC process (form, red and green cups, signing out).
  • Sign in to the RCTC app to see students in the room and check regularly for accuracy.
  • Keep the WCO WC schedule open and be aware of the changing coverage.
  • Track the order of students waiting for help using # cards and let walk-in students know expected wait times.
  • Communicate regularly with the tutors to ensure students get the support they are seeking.
  • Assist students with technology tasks like printing and accessing D2L, RCTC email, Tutor.com, Purdue OWL, etc.
  • Show students how to schedule online and in-person tutoring appointments.
  • Keep WC and supplies in clean, working order; report issues as needed.

Performance Expectations

WC Receptionists must be reliable, punctual, enthusiastic, and willing to help others. Key functions of the position are helping the WC run smoothly and welcoming students and explaining how to use the WC. The Receptionist must learn the WC schedule and explain the services so students can access them. The Receptionist will also ensure accurate data collection by requiring students to sign-in and sign-out on the computer.

WC Receptionists are expected to adhere to RCTC values and mission, communicate professionally, be approachable and attentive to student and staff needs and requests, respect all people, and work to foster a welcoming environment.

Professionalism:

  • Maintain an alert, friendly, and approachable demeanor.
  • Do not wear headphones or use personal devices during work hours. Leave the space to make and answer phone calls.
  • Dress appropriately for an academic setting.
  • Keep work areas tidy — push in chairs, straighten materials, clean tables/computers, and report issues to WC staff.
  • Do not invite friends to hang out during your shifts.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students and coworkers.
  • Refer situations outside your scope or comfort level to WC staff.

Time Management & Responsibility:

  • Arrive on time and be prepared for your shift.
  • Monitor student flow and the WC schedule to ensure all students receive timely and equitable assistance.
  • Communicate schedule changes to WC staff in advance to ensure coverage and continuity.
  • Accurately record hours and submit timesheets according to student employment guidelines.
  • Take a 15-minute break for every 4 consecutive hours worked.

Additional Notes

  • Complete student worker training when assigned.
  • Communicate any schedule changes to your lead worker in advance.
  • Submit your payroll forms to gain access to eTime through e-Services (Student Employment).
  • All hours must be recorded on eTime the day they are worked: https://www.rctc.edu/eservices/
  • You are entitled to a 15-minute break for every four consecutive hours worked.

Performance Review

Students are eligible for a wage increase after they have worked 200 hours and based on performance evaluation. The area supervisor will assess the student employee’s performance, work attendance and attitude as it relates to the job tasks, RCTC values, service attributes, core outcomes, and interaction with students, staff, and visitors.
