Books & Babies Early Childhood Student Facilitator – High Priority

The Books & Babies Early Childhood Student Facilitator supports a family-centered learning initiative designed to promote early literacy, positive child development, and applied learning. Two early childhood education students will engage with young children of parenting students while the parenting students participate in nearby workshops. Facilitators will apply strategies and knowledge gained through their coursework to interact, observe, and support children’s learning through play- and literacy-based activities.

Primary Responsibilities

Engage young children in developmentally appropriate activities, including:

• • Reading books and storytelling
  • Play-based learning activities
  • Social interaction and guided exploration
• Apply early childhood development strategies and best practices learned in coursework during interactions with children
• Observe children’s behavior, engagement, and developmental milestones during activities
• Model responsive, nurturing, and inclusive caregiving practices
• Maintain a safe, welcoming, and structured environment for children
• Communicate professionally and respectfully with parenting students, program staff, and supervisors
• Support smooth transitions between activities and sessions
• Participate in brief preparation, reflection, or debrief sessions as requestedTime Commitment
  • Approximately 2-5 hours/week
  • Sessions scheduled during parenting student workshops and parenting community sessions
  • Planning, set up, and clean up

Learning Outcomes for Student Facilitators

Through participation, student facilitators will:

• Gain hands-on experience working with young children in a real-world setting
• Strengthen skills in early literacy facilitation and play-based learning
• Practice observation and reflection aligned with early childhood development frameworks
• Develop professionalism and confidence in family-centered educational environments

Qualifications

Required:

• Currently enrolled in an Early Childhood Education or closely related program
• Interest in working with young children and families
• Reliable attendance and punctuality for scheduled sessions
• Ability to engage positively and patiently with children

• Complete student worker training when assigned.
• Communicate any schedule changes to your lead worker in advance.
• Submit your payroll forms to gain access to eTime through e-Services (Student Employment).
• All hours must be recorded on eTime the day they are worked: https://www.rctc.edu/eservices/
• You are entitled to a 15-minute break for every four consecutive hours worked.

  Temporary student employment funded through the SPSI grant

Students are eligible for a wage increase after they have worked 200 hours and based on performance evaluation. The area supervisor will assess the student employee’s performance, work attendance and attitude as it relates to the job tasks, RCTC values, service attributes, core outcomes, and interaction with students, staff, and visitors.
