Dear RCTC students,
The era of Generative AI is here. This letter is to help you understand RCTC’s approach to Generative AI in your classes, which may be different than other school or work settings you have experienced.
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning to produce new content (text, images, video, etc.) based on large amounts of data. It’s important to know that Generative AI can sometimes create biased, inaccurate, or fake content.
At RCTC:
- Each instructor determines whether Generative AI use is allowed, limited, or restricted in their course.
- Any unauthorized use of Generative AI will face the same penalties as other types of academic dishonesty as stated in the RCTC Code of Conduct.
Next steps for you:
- Refer to your instructor’s guidelines for the course.
If an instructor has not clearly shared their Generative AI policy in their syllabus, in their assignments, or in other coursework, talk with the instructor before using Microsoft Copilot, Grammarly, or another Generative AI tool (including translation apps) for any coursework.
- IF your instructor permits you to use Generative AI for any reason, review the facts listed below:
- You are responsible for all content (ideas, facts, citations).
- You are taking full responsibility for AI-generated materials as if you had produced them yourself: give credit for ideas, and make sure facts are correct. Ask your instructor for citation guidance.
- There are some Generative AI tools in your Microsoft 365 account.
- Remember that the Academic Success Center offers on-campus and virtual assistance for all stages of the writing process.
As Generative AI becomes more integrated into higher education, it’s crucial to maintain the spirit of human learning. While Generative AI can offer tools to enhance your educational experiences, it is your own creativity, critical thinking, and empathy that bring true depth and meaning to your learning journey.
We want to be a resource for you as you navigate this evolving landscape, and we have confidence that your unique contributions will continue to shape and inspire the future.
